Warts are small, rough textured, skin growths caused by one of around 100 types of human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus stimulates rapid growth of skin cells on the outer layer commonly around the hands and the feet.

Warts are contagious and can be passed through direct skin contact or by touching surfaces that have come in contact with the virus such as towels and razor blades. Although not everyone who comes in contact with the virus develops warts, people with weaker immune systems, injured skin and pre-existing chronic skin conditions are more susceptible to the virus.

Types of Warts

• Common Warts
  They are small, flesh-coloured and rough textured. Common warts may also have black scattered pinpoints, which are clotted blood vessels under your skin. They typically appear on the hands, fingers and the feet.
• Plantar Warts
  As the name goes, ‘plantar’ means ‘of the sole’ in Latin and refers to warts that form on the soles of the feet, specifically areas that bear weight. Unlike other warts, they are flat and grow into your skin. They are hard, rough and might induce pain or discomfort while walking.
• Flat Warts
  Flat warts are relatively smaller (around 1/8th of an inch wide), less thick and smoother growths that typically appear on the face, hands or the legs. They tend to appear in clusters (20 to 100 at a time) but usually do not cause any pain.
• Filiform warts
  Filiform warts have a distinct appearance and tend to grow on the face (specifically the mouth, eyelids, and the nose) at a rapid pace. They are rough, spiky thread-like projections. Unlike the other types of warts, they don’t normally appear in clusters and can be diagnosed easily by appearance alone.
• Genital Warts
  Flat warts are relatively smaller (around 1/8th of an inch wide), less thick and smoother growths that typically appear on the face, hands or the legs. They tend to appear in clusters (20 to 100 at a time) but usually do not cause any pain.
